[00:40.75]I replied well that's what I've been doing all my life

[00:44.84]I asked what their parents payed for them to do whatever the hell they want

[00:52.72]I said well that's what Walmart pays me to use my music in commercials
[00:56.84]And that maybe I could go to their school one day too

[01:05.84]After Metallica made it which was met with a thud

[01:22.08]And Carry Me Ohio really really well

[01:26.99]We also played When Doves Cry in honor of Prince who died the night before

[01:32.51]Steve Shelley played drums with me that night by the way

[01:35.83]What a great drummer
[01:36.98]Steve's also a really nice guy

[01:41.24]Great acoustics in the room and the show went really well
[01:43.87]
[01:45.01]And we got out of there by midnight
[01:46.56]
[01:47.34]What a cool group of kids and a nice promoter named Max
[01:50.06]
[01:51.04]It was the first show he ever promoted
[01:52.96]And he gave me a check in an envelope
[01:54.87]Which I actually didn't open until
[01:56.64]Just now here in my New York hotel three nights after the gig

[02:08.03]First of all thank you so much for playing Sarah Lawrence College
[02:13.93]
[02:15.08]Even though we have a really small school
[02:18.07]And don't get much attention
[02:19.52]
[02:20.34]We have a really lot of passionate kids
[02:23.51]
[02:24.80]I know every single one of them is thrilled to have you come
[02:32.83]
[02:34.44]Your music means so much to so many
[02:38.68]I first heard your music
[02:39.86]When I was searching songs about Los Angeles
[02:43.54]
[02:44.24]For a project in high school
[02:46.24]I was fifteen or sixteen
[02:47.93]
[02:48.75]And I came across Cruiser
[02:50.32]And it changed everything for me
[02:52.46]
[02:53.37]It was the music I had been searching for for a long time

[02:58.04]Some people say your music makes them sad and that you make sad music

[03:07.95]Your music was and is a comfort to me
[03:12.69]I feel a sort of connection to it that is less a melancholic thing

[03:27.04]I listened to the entirety of Benji
[03:28.91]And Red House Painters I back to back

[03:31.93]I thought of a lot of things
[03:33.79]When I listened to those records

[03:35.92]And somehow it brought me ease to know someone
[03:38.37]That was thinking some of those same things
[03:40.55]
[03:41.52]It was calming
[03:42.70]And even though I'm writing this letter before you even take the stage
[03:50.25]
[03:50.96]I know the scene you perform tonight
[03:53.04]Will be one of my most enjoyable moments
[03:56.32]So thank you again so much for coming
