現(xiàn)代爵士四重奏（The Modern Jazz Quartet）最初脫胎于Milt Jackson四重奏，成員包括鐵琴手（vibraphone）Milt Jackson、鋼琴手（piano）John Lewis、貝司（bass）Percy Heath以及鼓手（drums）Kenny Clarke。當(dāng)時(shí)的四個(gè)人中，以Kenny Clarke名氣最大、經(jīng)驗(yàn)最為豐富。做為一名鼓手，Clarke與Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk,Charlie Christian等人一起被視為硬波普樂的先驅(qū)。The Modern Jazz Quartet正式成立的時(shí)間是1952年。一年之后的1953年，MJQ連續(xù)發(fā)表了《Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson》和《Modern Jazz Quartet Volume 2》兩張唱片。1955年，MJQ又分別為Prestige和Savoy兩家公司灌錄《Concorde》和《Modern Jazz Quartet》。同年，Kenny Clarke離開樂隊(duì)，鼓手的位置由Connie Kay所替代。
