by Craig HarrisThe parlor music of the turn of the 20th century has been updated by Minneapolis-based sextet the Deadly Nightshade Family Singers. With falsetto singer Randall Throckmorton leading the way, the group continues to harmonize around one mic while creating a multi-instrumental blend of folk and pop sensibilities. The members of the Deadly Nightshade Family Singers represent a diverse range of experience. Bassist/vocalist Mark Anderson, who moved to Minneapolis in 1983, has played with such Twin Cities groups as Tucumcarri Ramblers, Stompson, and Peelie Wheelie, and has collaborated with his wife and Deadly Nightshade Family Singers' bandmate Lisa Fuglie in the bluegrass band Monroe Crossing. Born in Africa, Fuglie previously played mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and pennywhistle, and sang with the Hers, Cooker John, and the Ethnic Dance Theater Orchestra. Hailing from Washington, D.C., Accordion" Bob Barnes played with Lox & Vodka and Good Cooking before moving to Minneapolis. In addition to working as a solo strolling accordionist, he played with the Three Penny Klezmorim, tango nuevo band Mandragora, and, together with Throckmorton, in a 1950s-style lounge act. A native of Elk River, MN, Throckmorton, who plays guitar, violin, and melodica, also worked with Tulip Sweet's Larme de Colere. Madison, WI-born drummer/percussionist Leonard Madsen, who initially came to Minneapolis to attend Macalistar College, honed his musical skills as a member of Zaftig and Peel. A later member of the group and a veteran of the Twin Cities' bar band scene, Chris Murray plays guitar, bouzouki, manjo, and dobro and sings harmony. Most of the Deadly Nightshade Family Singers' repertoire was composed by former member Paul Chamberlain.
