The first movement particularly is possibly the finest demonstration in the realm of chamber music of the possibilities of the simultaneously lean and lush sound of one violin combining with one cello. The Trio Fontenay provide the best performance I have yet heard of this music, with pianist Hardin notable for better control of his dynamics than I have heard elsewhere

My only reservation is that the violinist and to a far lesser extent the cellist, are "over the top" when it comes to vibrato, and that adds a "cheesy factor" to their playing which takes away significantly from the experience. After all the pianist who is excellent in this trio has no vibrato at his disposal! The Vibrato problems also take away some of the folk feeling that is behind the music. In any event the second movement where the vibrato is more restrained (but could be more restrained)really shines.
